The bottom line (before you think I'm an over-the-top-mom) is that I love entertaining. While I'm not the chef in the family, I love getting the house ready, making a party playlist, setting up a slideshow, picking out invites, arranging flowers....etc. I made a promise to M that I will not do this for every birthday...I mean, won't we be at Monkey Joe's in a few years anyways? But a good old fashioned house party is my absolute favorite. We work hard on our homes and yards so why not celebrate that hard work with having friends over?

I picked a Cowboy theme for Ford's 1st birthday because it was cute, had plenty of decor ideas, and the invites I found on Etsy were so freaking adorable. Plus we could serve BBQ and beer and it would be a fun party!

A survey of red dwarf stars suggests that, in our galaxy alone, there are tens of billions of planets orbiting their stars' 'habitable zones.'?

Though these?alien planets?are difficult to detect, and only a few have been discovered so far, they should be ubiquitous, scientists say. And some of them could be good candidates to host extraterrestrial life.

The findings are based on a survey of 102 stars in a class called?red dwarfs, which are fainter, cooler, less massive and longer-lived than the sun, and are thought to make up about 80 percent of the stars in our galaxy.

Finding super-Earths

Using the HARPS spectrograph on the 3.6-metre telescope at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla Observatory in Chile, astronomers found nine planets slightly larger than Earth over a six-year period. These planets, called super-Earths, weigh between one and 10 times the mass of our own world, and two of the nine were discovered in the?habitable zone?of their parent star, where temperatures are right for liquid water to exist.

Extrapolating from these findings, the researchers estimate that tens of billions of these planets are to be found in the Milky Way, and about 100 should lie in the immediate neighborhood of the sun. [Vote Now! Strangest Alien Planet Finds]

"Our new observations with HARPS mean that about 40 percent of all?red dwarf stars have a super-Earth?orbiting in the habitable zone where liquid water can exist on the surface of the planet," team leader Xavier Bonfils of the Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers de Grenoble in France said in a statement. "Because red dwarfs are so common ? there are about 160 billion of them in the Milky Way ? this leads us to the astonishing result that there are tens of billions of these planets in our galaxy alone."

The two stars found inside the habitable zone were discovered around the stars Gliese 581 and?Gliese 667 C.?The latter planet is the second of three worlds orbiting its star, and seems to lie right in the middle of Gliese 667 C's habitable zone. Although the planet has four times the mass of Earth, it is considered the closest twin to Earth found so far.

Search for life

This and other planets are good candidates for follow-up studies that aim to analyze the atmospheres of these worlds for signs that organisms are living there.

"Now that we know that there are many super-Earths around nearby red dwarfs, we need to identify more of them using both HARPS and future instruments," said team member Xavier Delfosse. "Some of these planets are expected to pass in front of their parent star as they orbit ? this will open up the exciting possibility of studying the planet's atmosphere and searching for signs of life."

However, there are some issues with looking for life around red dwarfs.

Since these stars are cooler than the sun, their habitable zones are much closer in than ours. That puts any planets there at risk of being hit with stellar eruptions or flares, which are common on red dwarfs. Such flares could release X-rays or ultraviolet radiation that could harm or inhibit the development of life, scientists say.

The new findings will be described in a paper to be published in an upcoming issue of the journal?Astronomy & Astrophysics.

After adjustment for variables including age, sex, and comorbidities, patients who discontinued statin therapy had a 60% increase in cardiovascular mortality (HR 1.60, 95% CI 1.15 to 2.23, P=0.005), according to Mary A. De Vera, PhD, of the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada in Vancouver, and colleagues.

Discontinuation also was associated with a 79% increase in all-cause mortality (HR 1.79, 95% CI 1.46 to 2.20, P

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have twice the risk of cardiovascular mortality compared with the general population, and Statins are recommended in these patients for cholesterol lowering and to prevent ischemic heart disease.

Previous studies have suggested that more than half of all individuals who are prescribed Statins eventually stop taking them, and De Vera?s group reported earlier that more than one-third of patients with rheumatoid arthritis discontinued the drugs over an 8-year period.

To explore the impact of this on mortality, the researchers analyzed data from an established cohort of 37,000 patients with rheumatoid arthritis in British Columbia, and determined that 4,102 had been prescribed a statin.

- Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), with these patients having twice the risk of CVD mortality compared to individuals in the general population.

- This population-based longitudinal study indicates that statin discontinuation in RA patients is associated with increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease and from all causes.

- Mean age of the patients was 66.6 years, and mean disease duration was 19 months. A total of 60% were women.

During 16,144 person-years of follow-up, 45.4% of patients discontinued taking a statin.

And during a mean follow-up of 4 years, there were 467 deaths from any cause and 198 deaths from cardiovascular disease. Among patients who died of cardiovascular disease, the most common causes were acute myocardial infarction in 31.3%, ischemic heart disease in 30.8%, and cerebrovascular accidents in 15.2%.

Aside from statin discontinuation, other factors associated with heightened risk of cardiovascular death were:

Older age, HR 1.07 (95% CI 1.05 to 1.09, P Male sex, HR 1.53 (95% CI 1.15 to 2.04, P=0.004)
Previous myocardial infarction, HR 1.47 (95% CI 1.03 to 2.09, P=0.03)
Use of antihypertensive medications, HR 1.87 (95% CI 1.26 to 2.78, P=0.002)
Use of heart failure medications, HR 1.79 (95% CI 1.31 to 2.45, P=0.0002)

The researchers also calculated the effects of time since discontinuation and found a 0.4% increase in cardiovascular mortality for each month since stopping treatment (HR 1.004, 95% CI 1.001 to 1.016).

For all-cause mortality, factors other than stopping statin treatment that were associated with risk included:

A little niggle I noticed is that certain articles decided to automatically launch in the browser instead of the app. I'm hoping that's just an early release issue and will get fixed soon.

Otherwise, on a tablet, the UI is pretty plan, but functional. Zite doesn't look like it was optimized for Android tablets, but it runs, nonetheless. With Ice Cream Sandwich out, I was kind of hoping for more in terms of visual polish, but if just getting a working app out the door was the goal of the developers, they've done that much.

Zite for Android definitely comes off like it's still in beta, but it's been a hit on iDevices for some time, so if you were pining away for it, it's finally here. If your run-of-the-mill RSS feeds (or Pulse or Google Reader) weren't cutting it, definitely give Zite a shot. If they were, maybe you should give Zite a shot, anyway. It's definitely got room to grow, but I'm sure the developers will be hard at work, ramping up their app for the Android faithful.

Among the many different components of the advice, such as providing information on the harms of excessive drinking, trying to boost motivation and self-confidence, and advising on avoidance of social cues for drinking, they found that the most effective piece of advice was to encourage the patient to monitor his or her alcohol consumption, typically by keeping a daily record.

Lead author Susan Michie, Professor of Health Psychology at University College London, explains why self-monitoring is such helpful advice: "In brief interventions, it's important to advise people how to reduce their drinking rather than just saying they ought to drink less. Getting patients to record how much alcohol they drink each day provides a concrete, easy task that raises their awareness of their behaviour and how well they are doing in staying within limits that they set themselves. This may seem like common sense but common sense needs to be supported by hard evidence for it to be acted upon in official policies."

Australia extinction 'due to man'

Humans hunted Australia's giant vertebrates to extinction about 40,000 years ago, the latest research published in Science has concluded.

The cause of the widespread extinction has provoked much debate, with climate change being one theory.

However, scientists studied dung samples from 130,000 and 41,000 years ago, when humans arrived, and concluded hunting and fire were the cause.

The extinction in turn caused major ecological changes to the landscape.

The scientists looked at pollen and charcoal from Lynch's Crater, a sediment-filled volcanic crater in Queensland that was surrounded by tropical rainforest until European settlement.

They found Sporormiella spores, which grow in herbivore dung, virtually disappeared around 41,000 years ago, a time when no known climate transformation was taking place.

At the same time, the incidence of fire increased, as shown by a steep rise in charcoal fragments.

It appears that humans, who arrived in Australia around this time, hunted the megafauna to extinction, the scientists said.

The megafauna included three-metre tall giant kangaroos and marsupial lions, as well as giant birds and reptiles.

Susan Rule of the Australian National University in Canberra and her colleagues concluded that vegetation also changed with the arrival of humans.

Mixed rainforest was replaced by leathery-leaved, scrubby vegetation called sclerophyll.

But these changes to the landscape took place after the animal extinctions, indicating that they were the result of the extinction and not its cause, they said.

Human-lit fire - deliberately targeted and more frequent than lightning - had a devastating effect of plants that had previously been protected.

"Any climate change at those times was modest and highly unlikely to affect the outcome," author Matt McGlone wrote in Science.

Lead research author Chris Johnson, from the School of Zoology at the University of Tasmania, said the research raised further questions about the ecological impact of the extinction.

"Big animals have big impacts on plants. It follows that removing big animals should produce significant changes in vegetation."

The removal of large herbivores altered the structure and composition of vegetation, making it more dense and uniform, he said.

"Getting a better understanding of how environments across Australia changed as a result of megafaunal extinction is a big and interesting challenge, and will help us to understand the dynamics of contemporary Australian ecosystems."

'Utter havoc'

Dr John Alroy, from the Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science at Macquarie University, New South Wales, said the debate about whether humans contributed to widespread extinction should "be over now".

"But it has dragged on for nearly a half-century now because the idea that stone age hunters could cause such utter havoc across three entire continents over very short time spans strikes many people as incredible.

"Like it or not, though, it's the truth, and it's time for us to all confront it."

However, Gavin Prideaux, a lecturer in vertebrate palaeontology in the School of Biological Sciences at Flinders University, South Australia, said further research was necessary.

He said the latest study "supports a mounting number of studies that have argued that climate change was not primarily responsible for the Late Pleistocene extinctions in other parts of the continent.

"To test the inferences from this paper we might look at similar lake records from other regions of Australia and seek fossil deposits in the northeast that preserve bones of the giant animals themselves."

The soldier accused of killing civilians in Afghanistan will face 17 charges of murder for his alleged actions. NBC's John Yang reports.

FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. ??? The charges against Staff Sgt. Robert Bales for the premeditated murder of 17 Afghan civilians include the possibility of a death sentence. But, analysts say,?the chances of a death sentence actually being imposed are not high.

?We don?t have a particularly bloodthirsty military justice program,? said Eugene Fidell, the co-founder of the National Institute of Military Justice who teaches at Yale Law School.

Staff Sgt. Robert Bales charged with 17 counts of murder in Afghanistan massacre

There are currently six men on death row in the military?s only maximum security prison -- euphemistically called the ?Disciplinary Barracks? -- here on Fort Leavenworth. But the last execution was carried out in 1961, when an Army ammunition handler was hanged there for raping an 11-year-old girl in Austria.

It?s been so long, in fact, that the military prison no longer has the equipment needed to execute a prisoner. Instead, the sentence would be carried out at the federal prison in Terre Haute, Ind., where Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh was executed. The current method is lethal injection; the Leavenworth military prison had an electric chair when that was the method, but it was never used.

None of those currently on death row were convicted of crimes on the battlefield against foreign civilians; all were convicted of murders of U.S. civilians or fellow military personnel.

Death toll in Afghanistan massacre climbs to 17

The next step in the process is what?s called an Article 32 investigation, which will determine if the case should go to trial (which would be a court martial), and if so, what specific charges should be brought?(they can be different from the charges originally filed), and if they should carry the possibility of the death penalty.

Analysts say that process will not be quick.

?I would expect that in a complicated case like this, it would be several months before we would see an Article 32 investigation,? said Victor Hansen, a retired Army lawyer who now teaches at New England Law in Boston. ?There?s a lot of investigation the government has yet to do.?

If this becomes a death penalty case, there would have to be 12 jury members, and their guilty verdict would have to be unanimous for it to result in an execution. In other cases, as few as five jurors are required and a two-thirds vote can convict.

?If you have a capital case, we don?t cut corners,? said the Yale Law School?s Fidell.

PTSD: Having the courage to ask for help

And because Bales is an enlisted man, he could request that enlisted personnel make up at least a third of the 12 considering his fate.

Even though Bales is being held at Fort Leavenworth, proceedings may not necessarily be held here. A leading contender for the trial venue is Joint Base Lewis-McChord outside Seattle, where Bales is based and near where his wife and two small children live.

Glassdoor has taken a look at how Google and Facebook compare in the eyes of employees and job candidates, and has extracted a number of interesting data points related to CEO approval, benefits, perks and more. For background, Glassdoor is a jobs and career community where employees can anonymously rate companies and CEOs. First, Glassdoor says that so far in 2012, Google has overtaken Facebook in employee satisfaction company ratings. In fact, this is the first time Google has overtaken Facebook in the past four years, says Glassdoor. In 2012, Google?s company rating reached a 3.9, surpassing Facebook?s 3.7 rating. Lookout releases 'Mobile Lost & Found' info-site with results of phone loss study

Did you know that over $30 billion worth of phones will be lost in the U.S. alone this year? Yeah, that number shocked me a bit as well. But it came from Lookout's 15 million strong user base and was part of their Phone Loss study compiled of last years (2011) data. They didn't stop there, either. They've compiled lists full of factoids about when and where phones are getting lost, and just how much it's costing us. Granted, Lookout sells a product to help find lost phones, but it's still fun to have a look at the numbers. 

Using the Foursquare API to turn Longitude and Latitude into a venue, they expound the numbers a bit as well. Trivia like the fact that in Chicago it's common to lose a phone in a church (number three on the list), while in London it common to do so in the pub (number one) come from this sort of data. Unfortunately, another thing they noticed is that many of the top locations in the U.S. where people "lost" their phones also happen to be cities with high crime statistics. These are just examples of the things you can find out about lost phones, but they have some good news as well -- 9,000,000 smartphones (that's one every 3.5 seconds) were lost then located with Lookout last year. That's a great reason to use an app like Lookout, or one of the many others, to help you find your phone when (not if) you lose it.

NKorea invites UN nuke monitors to return

VIENNA (AP) ? North Korea has invited the International Atomic Energy Agency to return, three years after expelling its nuclear monitors, the agency said Monday. The U.S. said such a move would be welcome but remained critical of the North's rocket launch plans.

Without disclosing the North's terms, IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor said it received the invitation on Friday. That was the same day that Pyongyang announced it plans to launch a satellite on a rocket, a move that Washington has suggested could jeopardize a nuclear moratorium deal reached with the United States last month.

IAEA's announcement of the overture from the North came just hours after Ri Yong Ho, a senior North Korean nuclear negotiator, said Pyongyang was sending invitations to agency inspectors as part of implementing the moratorium agreement.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Washington had not been told of a formal invitation to the IAEA from the North ? but said such a move would be positive, while repeating America's reservations about the planned satellite launch.

"Obviously there's benefit for any access that the IAEA can get," Nuland told reporters. "But it doesn't change the fact that we would consider a satellite launch a violation not only of their U.N. obligations but of the commitments they made to us."

Now in doubt, the deal foresaw hundreds of tons of U.S. food aid to the impoverished North in exchange for a moratorium on missile and nuclear tests, as well as suspending nuclear work at its Yongbyon reactor.

The deal also opened the way for IAEA inspections of the North's nuclear program, which has gone unmonitored since the country asked agency experts at the reactor to leave and restarted its atomic activities three years ago.

The agency did not details the terms of the invitation to visit North Korea, including whether they would involve an in-country discussion of what IAEA experts could do at nuclear sites, or whether they outlined what the U.N. nuclear monitors would do at the sites.

"Nothing has been decided yet,' said Tudor, the IAEA spokeswoman, in an email to news organizations. "We will discuss with the DPRK and other parties concerned for the details of the visit," she said, using the acronym for the North's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

North Korea is under tough U.N. sanctions that were tightened in 2009 when it conducted its second nuclear test and launched a long-range rocket. In late 2010, Pyongyang unveiled a uranium enrichment facility that could give North Korea a second route to manufacture nuclear weapons in addition to a plutonium-based program at its reactor.

Despite concerns from China, its chief ally, Ri, the senior North Korean nuclear negotiator, reiterated that his country views the planned launch as legitimate after holding talks Monday with his counterpart in Beijing. He said the launch of the satellite is separate from recent talks with the United States and North Korea over food aid.

"The launching of the satellite is part to our right to develop space programs," Ri said, warning the North would respond to any threats on its sovereignty.

"Regarding the peaceful purpose of the satellite launching, if others are practicing double standards or inappropriately interfere with our sovereign rights, we will be forced to react to it. But we will try our best for these things not to happen," he said.

The U.S., Japan, Britain and others have urged North Korea to cancel the launch, calling it a threat to diplomatic efforts and warning that it would violate a U.N. ban on nuclear and missile activity because the same rocket technology can be used for long-range missiles.

The South Korean government on Monday called the launch a provocation that is aimed at developing a long-distance method to deliver nuclear weapons, according to South Korea's presidential office.

China, North Korea's main political and economic ally, expressed rare concern Saturday about the planned launch and called on all parties to exercise restraint. Ri said he met with his Chinese counterpart Wu Dawei in Beijing but did not give details about their talks.

North Korea said Friday that it would fire an observation satellite into space on a new rocket as part of celebrations next month of the 100th anniversary of late President Kim Il Sung's birth.

The moratorium agreement was seen at the time as a promising step toward better relations between Washington and Pyongyang and progress toward restarting six-nation talks on North Korean nuclear disarmanent.

Nuland said Monday the U.S. is "heartened" that the other parties in the talks, including China and Russia, had made clear they regard the launch as a bad idea, violating North Korea's international obligations.

"We are hoping and expecting that the DPRK will take that to heart," Nuland said.
